About two months ago the Cultural Center of Railways of Larissa had the luck, the joy and the honor to receive a model train layout with all its rolling stock as a concession for presentation, demonstration and learning in schools and around the world in the museum of the Cultural Center .
The layout was granted by Alexandra Vasilakopoulou and Angelina Michaelidou, who are the daughters of the initiator and creator Spyros Vasilakopoulos, a graduate of ΕΜΠ, modeller and friend of the railway who is no longer alive.
Its design and construction began in the late 60s, it measures 2.05m x 1.75m. in HO scale with DC analogue system and the Fleischmann company dominates in lines, electrics and rolling stock.
Its grammology is very interesting, forming two spirals over the whole area of the layout, one of the two in elevation and two 180° turns at the ends that reverse the line and make it double in a different direction. At three points there are branch lines with a change of polarity, four dead ends and a five-line yard for laying trains, three stations, two of which also have sidings, a turntable, a functional loading and unloading crane (hand-made) and functional traffic lights.
But where more emphasis was given by its creator is the electrical part, with electrical and technical drawings as well as written notes and observations that helped us to set it up and put it back into operation.
The arrangement has a control panel with power blocks on each line piece, scissor control, crane control, voltmeter and ammeter.
Due to the wear and tear of time and its non-operation for the last eight years, it presented some problems in its electrical parts such as switches, capacitors and various others which we are solving little by little without affecting the movement of trains.
In conclusion, I would like to say that it is a "vintage" arrangement far ahead of its time in terms of its electrical design and automation and I think it is worth it if you are passing through Larissa to visit it and at the same time see the rest of the exhibits in the museum of the Cultural Center.
