Kα801-802 E n2v + 3T Ηanomag 1912 Ex, BDZ, ex PDS Z 521–22. Returned to BDZ by the BG Army in 1941-4, classified 28.82 & 28.83 respectively

Hi everyone,

This is to my knowledge one of the very few existing pix of the Ka; shown is Ka802 in an uknown time and place, but presumably in the mid 30s, judging from the siderod painting. These engines were 2 cylinder compounds, the pic showing the low-pressure cylinder, and, judging by the state of the engine shown, they were probably out of service.

There is no record indicating whether the engines were actually used by the ΤΑΓΜΑ ΣΙΔΗΡΟΔΡΟΜΩΝ (The Railway military unit), but if, as often stated they were indeed taken back to Bulgaria in WWII they were probably based in Northeastern Greece (Drama or Alexandroupoli), Thessaloniki being a German zone.

It is actually difficult to trace those engines after WWII; the whole class was renumbered to 08 in the early 50s and I have been unable to locate a renumbering table chart.

For those interested, a few pix of class 08 engines can be found in the Bulgarian forum http://railwaymodeling.com/photogallery/steam_en.htm

Any contribution concerning the fate of Ka801 and 802 is welcome!

Cheers,

Iossif

According to a steam loco list of some railfan from abroad (can't remember his name), the Bulgarians took them back during WW II and became БДЖ 28.82 and 28.83.

You're right, they are ex- 28 and not 08. Sorry, mea culpa...

Apparently, a book has been recently published in Bulgaria about the Bulgarian railways; has anybody seen it?
