Steam locomotives Identification

Re: Steam locomotives Identification

142 was an original 2-8-0. I know the locomotives that were 2-6-0 and had an additional axle added in the drivers but have nothing to do with this locomotive in the picture.

Hi everyone,

A couple of observations from an old Geologist: first of all, there is no way this pic was taken at Soufli; the Thracian landscape along Evros is completely flat, and nowhere around Soufli are limestones as those shown in the pic exposed near the river.
This landscape is typical of the Dinaric region, could be either the upper Axios (Vardar) valley, or in the Dalmatian Karst (Montenegro, Southern Croatia; it is definitely not in Slovenia or in Istria, because there are no important rivers there, and because the people shown - and the goats - are not very typical for those regions).

I'd rather think the pic was shot in the Neretva or Drina Valley, and the locomotive shown looks, from that distance, rather like a JDZ 01 (2-6-2 or 1'Ch'1, 4-cylinder compound).

Obviously this is not an ex-cathedra expertise, everything can be discussed!!

Cheers,

Iossif

Could also be a Borsig 2-6-0 of the SM; in which case, the pic might have been taken along lake Vegoritis (Ostrovsko Ezero) in Western Macedonia.
The landscape matches, and also the people shown...

Can smbd with an image processing software enlarge the smokebox door?

Dear all,

I am totally ignorant of the subject, and I cannot find the place names mentioned. However I do wonder whether this type of locomotive ran in Greece:
