Now someone who likes "our photos" will borrow them without permission... and you know the rest. Anyhow, that will not stop me sharing so I will continue:

And now for the track gauge. Without it, no accurate model can be made

2014-08-16 18.23.34.jpg

Photo Balkanmodels: August 2014. The rails were welded onto metal plates which in turn were placed on top of homemade and untreated wooden sleepers. Loose ballast was placed cosmetically between them.

2014-08-16 18.24.00.jpg

Photo Balkanmodels: August 2014. Well it looks like 2 foot 8 inches or 53cm. Bearing in mind that because of the way the rails were put together, the gauge was not running constant. Another fact that needs to be considered is that the loco has side extensions to its frames that indicates (from similar locos here in the U.K) that it must have been originally running on 2 foot 6 inches gauge. Who did the re gauging and when? Any theories?

Additionally, my recollections of my visit in 1985 (alas no photos) are of a very narrow gauge railway running along the main street down to the pier. No ballast, just dirt, no visible sleepers and a gauge between 30cm to 40cm :?

thanks Christo, I really enjoyed your presentation!
It's great to find out that there are places like that, preserved and well maintained!

I think I have read somewhere, that the old pier is not used anymore as the final product (Magnesite) is transported from the Nea Moudania port

and a nice video about the Gerakini Mines and production stages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05xlnT0FnII

Christo, thanks for the construction plates photos, and the presentation ;)

Here are some photos of the remainings of the "French Company" C.F.M.L. (Compagnie Francaise des Mines du Laurium) at Lavrio and Kamariza.
